Free erections? Tesco’s embarrassing cash machine translation mishap at new Aberystwyth store

Signs at a cash machine at the new Tesco Express in Aberystwyth town centre say ‘codiad am ddim’

Welsh speakers in Aberystwyth have been promised «free erections» at a new Tesco Express store.

A cash machine at the newly opened store in Aberystwyth town centre promises users a «codiad am ddim» which translates colloquially as «free erection».

A more appropriate wording would be «arian am ddim».

Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies spotted the sign and uploaded it to his Facebook page.

Mr Davies said: “10/10 to Tesco for considering the Welsh language but perhaps they should have had it checked by an actual Welsh speaker before putting the signs on the machines.”

Local teen Garin Fitter, 18, whose girlfriend works at the new store, also shared the image online.

“My girlfriend asked me about translations yesterday and I told her what the correct Welsh would be but they’ve still put the wrong word up,” he said.

“I am not sure how they came up with it because anyone with a basic understanding of Welsh would know it is the wrong word.

“They must have used Google translate. I think it’s quite funny but I know some people might be offended they didn’t bother to check they had got it right.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: «We’ve taken down the sign and will replace it with the correct translation. We appreciate this is a sensitive area.»
